Before You Tee Off

Many golfers cannot wait to hit that golf ball off the tee. Many a times, we overlook some important steps before we let the golf ball fly. That is also the reason why many amateur golfers tee off badly, and I mean BADLY!

There are four important steps to take note BEFORE teeing off. Every one of us can't wait to let the golf ball fly, but next time round, before you tee off, do consider the following steps.

Tee it up! Would golfers risk taking a divot with a driver? The risk reward is far greater if you have the ball sitting slightly off the grass. You will have a lower trajectory ball flight, but the chances of taking some grass with it are greater. When you have just air between the clubface and the golf ball, the club head speed will be far faster than having grass in between. Tee it up and let it fly?

Architects of golf courses designed the golf course in such a way that you have to think and plan your shot BEFORE you act. Nothing can be more discouraging than to launch a big one off the tee in the WRONG direction! I am sure you have experienced tee boxes facing southwest, and the fairway is heading southeast.

Stand behind your golf ball and look down the fairway, and not down the tee box. You can also address the ball with the club head behind the golf ball looking down the fairway and stepping into position. Once you are aiming in the right direction, launch your big shot off the tee box!

Planting your feet correctly and properly keeps the upper portion of your body steady for a good swing. How many times have we seen gofers stepped into the ball and only to find out that their footing has gave away below them, especially during early mornings as the dew on the grass or wet weather conditions made the ground extremely slippery. So, next time, do your waggle at address, it may seem to be a long ritual, but it works.

Keeping your head still is also important. You have never seen Tiger tilt his head up slightly and steering directly behind the ball before liftoff agree? Professional golfers have their heads locked into position. If you try lifting your head, even slightly, you will find that the action leaves a room for the shoulders to turn freely through the upper coil of the body. Keeping your head steady is the key indicator as to where the clubface has to return for impact. Having a steady head also avoids a lot of guessing as to where the ball is at impact. Lock your upper portion of the body in place by starting with a steady head and let her fly!

So next time, tee up, face the right direction, maintain a steady head and have your feet planted. Your golf muscle memory will take care of the rest!
